ALBUM REVIEW: M.I.A. - KALA

 M.I.A. - KALA

Kala is the second studio album by UK experimental electronica and rap artist M.I.A. and will be released in the United Kingdom on August 20th and on August 21st in the USA. OK, I definitely take back any insecurities I had for M.I.A. second time around (shame on me), cos this album is off rip forreal. Almost every song is live and organic, I was bobbing my head to quite a few. This is not what I expected at all, “Jimmy” is starting to grow on me, but I absolutely fiend for “Paper Planes” and “XR2″! Production was on point; Timbaland, Bangladesh and M.I.A. of course - just to name the few I know of and love. Guest appearances include Afrikan Boy, The Wilcannia Mob and Timbaland on “Come Around,” also my favorite. M.I.A. fans, like myself, will not be disappointed.  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: Prince - Planet Earth

Planet Earth is the forthcoming album from music icon Prince, BUY, BUY, BUY. This album kind of sticks to the original LP, which was 45 minutes, it’s really short. Anyway, despite that fact - I really enjoyed the album! So the quantity didn’t matter, rather the quality of the album, and that it had! My favorite tracks are, of course, the first single “Guitar” - play the gui-tar Prince! If you notice in the breakdown of Justin Timberlake’s “I Think She Knows” Interlude they both favor each other. I also love “Chelsea Rodgers,” which is the second single ironically. Another favorite of mine that you absolutely must listen to is “Future Baby Mama” and “Planet Earth”. I recommend this album for all those R&B/ Rock heads, it’s a great record you can throw in the whip while your driving to work or just riding around on a cloudy night.  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: Sean Kingston - Sean Kingston

Sean Kingston is the self-titled debut album of your boy set to released on July 31st so BUY, BUY, BUY please. The album features guest appearances by Paula DeAnda, Vybez Kartel and Kardinal Official (people say I look like him, lol). Now, as far as production went your boy Jonathan Rotem aka JR took it upon himself to produce on this project while Sean Kingston wrote the entire album. He is “the package” as far as I’m concerned; great singer, rapper and songwriter whose rise to fame began with a little invention called MySpace. Now, known for deftly switching between an Urban-American dialect and a Jamaican patois in his music - Sean Kingston creates this genuine sound that immegiately draws you in. This is the case with his latest LP, you know? At first, I thought his whole theme was “hopeless romantic” but not at all! I think the album doesn’t vary, nor disappoints, and is very diverse on subjects. I still can’t believe he’s a peer of mine and he made it so big. I feel proud that he’s from Miami and reppin’ to the fullest! I wish him all the success, he deserves it, after listening to that album - I sort of step into his shoes for a minute. If you want to know my personal, personal opinion … I would definitely recommend this as a good buy. You will not regret it, seriously.  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: Common - Finding Forever

Common is back with his seventh studio album, Finding Forever, set to release July 31st on GOOD Music. I recently had the pleasure of listening to the retail, the album features guest appearances from my favorite Neo-soul singer and jazz musician Bilal, R&B virtuoso D’Angelo, and of course the man that needs no introduction: Kanye West! Speaking of which, the album was 90 percent produced by him; it also features some great work from will.i.am, J Dilla, Devo Springsteen and Karriem Riggins. I really recommend this record for all those Hip-hop heads out there! Finding Forever was like an artistic voyage into the inevitable, commodious and beautifully arranged from it’s writers, features and especially producers. I really don’t want to give too much away, remember this is ART, I cannot waste art like that. Please go out and SUPPORT THIS BROTHER!, he is the reason that there is still hope! If you want to know my personal favorites they are “Black Maybe,” “So Far To Go,” and “Forever Begins”.  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: Enrique Iglesias - Insomniac

Insomniac, appropriately titled name of the brand new album, from Pop/Latin singer Enrique Iglesias recently hit stores - and I know I’m usually really early with my reviews but I just heard this album and I really enjoyed it. Insomniac includes my absolute favorite song that’s pretty hot right now “Do You Know,” or “The Ping Pong Song” as they call it, the first single lifted from the album. The track was produced by the infamous Sean Garrett who has written and produced major hits for Ciara, Destiny’s Child, Fergie, Nelly, Usher… hell! He even did some material for Ms. Kelly recently. Aside from Sean’s amazing work, Stargate did some nice production on there as well. There’s not really that many appearances from other artists… just this really hard song entitled “Push” featuring rapper Lil’ Wayne! Overall the album isn’t so bad, a lot of club and trance joints, typically Enrique. The album recently dropped last month and is IN STORES NOW so go cop that!!! Watch “Do You Know” after the cut!!  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: KELLY ROWLAND - MS. KELLY

Related Categories:

Ms. Kelly, appropriately titled name of Kelly Rowland’s sophomore album, hits stores on July 3rd so BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY. I have to admit I wasn’t too keen about the project and “change” overall. I really loved her last album, Simply Deep, maybe because I’m into a lot of alternative R&B music. When I first heard she was doing something different and was keeping away from that genre I cringed. In my opinion, back then of course, was that she would stick to her original sound because it was her; although seasons do change and there will be some “creative differences” in the mix, I’m actually glad she went this route with Ms. Kelly, the title in itself is sassy and makes a bold statement. You already know what your getting as soon as the album starts off with the single “Like This,” “Comeback,” “Ghetto,” and “Work” just to name a few; all very aggressive and in your face, she has definitely grown over the duration of her career. The album sort of smooths out a little in the end with “Flashback,” “Every Thought is You,” “The Show,” (damn Kelly Freeaky!) “Love,” “Better Without You,” all of which are my favorites! I completely see Kelly in a whole new light now, I got a taste of her world, both emotionally and respectfully. I think this is kind of like a testimonial for Ms. Kelly really, but a celebration with her fans; almost to say, “you know what, I moved on and I’m living my life.” and that’s absolutely beautiful - I highly recommend you buy this album!  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: T.I. - T.I. VS T.I.P.

Mr. Tip Harris is back with his third studio album T.I. vs T.I.P. set to drop July 3rd off his independent label Grand Hustle. The album features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Jay-Z, Wyclef Jean and other peeps; it also features production by Danja, Just Blaze, and the Runners. I actually think I get the whole aspect of this, he’s basically battling his himself, literally. The person he is and the person he used to be. It’s interesting, this album plays the roles. I really can’t give anything away but it’s a hard album and it has a lot of great production. There are actually a lot of tracks that are potential hits and personally relate to a family member’s life for me. My favorite from this album is “Tell ‘Em I Said That,” this is the absolute truth, ain’t no big shots in reality ya’ll. I hate fake people that live mediocre lives, especially in these cases with rappers, talking about ish you don’t even do or have done.  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: Kelly Clarkson - My December

My December is the third studio from Kelly Clarkson and will be released (to the United States) June 26th along with the singles “Never Again” and “Sober”. I listened to the album recently, I really wanted to post a couple tracks, it sounds really good but the quality, not so good. For the most part it’s enough to get you through until the release date. A lot of rock inspirations, pop, and a little techno surprisingly, my favorite tracks are “Sober,” “Don’t Waste Your Time, ” “Judas,” “Haunted,” “Can I Have A Kiss” damn- I might as well just say the whole damn album! Man I can’t wait for this to drop cause the quality, again, is terrible but I can’t complain! The lyrics are so strong and make deep statements but so simplistic at the same time. You might as well call the album a “Confessions of a Broken Heart,” although that album and this album are completely different :slaps myself for saying that: but the concept and rawness of both are uncanny. I can also say, that along with Rihanna, Kelly is also rebelling a little bit. From when she first started out she was all bubble gum and innocent but now it is definitely a difference in style, sound, just overall “image” you could say. I’m actually feelin’ the female empowerment and rebellion going on.  read more »

ALBUM REVIEW: R. Kelly - Double Up

Related Categories:

For Double Up R. Kelly expands his hit-making collaborative efforts and enlists a diverse roster of musical guests that includes Usher, Kid Rock, Nelly, Chamillionaire, T.I., T-Pain, Huey, Ludacris, Keyshia Cole, and Swizz Beatz. Double Up is R. Kelly’s ninth solo release since his smash solo debut 12 Play. Mr. R. Kelly dominates the music charts with his latest LP, Double Up, the number 1 best selling R&B album in the country and it looks like its receiving some great reviews too! Now with the whole situation he’s facing now, child pornography? I commend him through the trail process, everyone is human, we all make mistakes. I haven’t seen the alleged video nor do I intend to, but I hear that the whole rendezvous, it appears like, was nothing but consensual and I don’t recall this young hoe (obviously she’s done this before) reporting to her defenses but her aunt. So, and I also believe in the aspect “innocent until proven guilty.” R. Kelly has done really nothing wrong, they don’t even have enough evidence to prove anything, with all the advance technology we have this day and age. Anyway, back to the review, the album is just ok - nothing more or less - but a die hard R. Kelly fan might beg to differ so again, I leave it at that for your discretion. In my opinion, he has indeed gotten a little reckless, watering down his lyrics to the masses, and he is getting older so I wouldn’t recommend going that route but as Mr. Carter so eloquently said, “men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.” So again, I leave it up to the consumer’s discretion. But may I add Usher and Kellz tore “Same Girl” up read more »
