Good. Lord. What a week. I'm exhausted, life has kicked my behind as of late. Big shoutout to the Black Graduate Students Association of the University of Florida, who brought me in to do a little blogging workshop. I had a great time! If any of you guys ever want to bring the Sister Toldja experience to your campus (or nightclub), send an email to booking@thebeautifulstruggler.com!
Got your Halloween costume on deck? I do! I can't tell y'all what it is yet, but I am super excited. The homies and I have a group theme and we've been planning it for months! There shall be Twitpics, so follow me if you want to see: twitter.com/sistertoldja. Also, in a third movement of shameless self-promotion,
won't you be a friend of mine on the Facebook? It's Friday, it's payday and I want to dance. Will you join me? Thanks. These are some of my current favorite iPod jams that literally find me doing a little twirl or two-step in public. I can't help it. Wouldn't help it, even if I could. I spend a lot of time on the MTA and these are the songs that keep me from killing my fellow passengers. New York, you are quite welcome.
1)Prince-"Future Baby Mama"Prince and ONLY Prince could have me, the patron saint of marriage, humming and swaying to "Future baby mama....keep your name". I don't know how this song didn't blow up on radio, cause it's some silky soul music. Definitely a good 'close your eyes and pretend the G train doesn't smell like Newports and wet dog' selection. 2) Maxwell-"Bad Habits"This lady tried to give me a reproachful look for humming along to this in the Family Dollar yesterday. The nerve. I am the Shogun of Bed Stuy and I am the QUEEN of reproachful looks. I am BEYOND your reproachful looks, dammit. This my jam, don't disturb this groove, woman!
3) Wu-Tang Clan-"Triumph"This song recently reemerged into my daily rotation. It reminds me of high school, even though I was in 7th grade when it came out. My friend Chris used to do Deck's verse in Physics class all the time out of nowhere. Which was okay, cause the sh!t is just that cold. How cute is Ghostface at the end with the glasses? Is this why my female hip-hop head journey is so difficult-because I can't help but express my appreciation for man cuteness? I'm boy crazy, sue me. *Kanye shrug*
4)Al B. Sure!- "I Love It (Papi Aye Aye Aye)"You know I fly my Al B. Sure! stan flag high, but even I am embarrassed by how much I love this song. I hate the appropriation of the word "Papi". Hate it. But this is my jam and brings me to my happy and calm place on the C train more often than I want to admit.
5)Red Hot Chilli Peppers- "Give It Away"
I should totally do this at some karaoke spot and dance provocatively. I think it would be very good for everyone involved.
Have a spooktackular Halloween! Drink copious amounts of alcohol! Do not drive! Message! Make it a great weekend, no matter what you do, and be safe.
