Pro golfer Tiger Woods was involved in a single car accident outside of his Florida home early Friday morning at about 2:20 AM. As he was pulling his 2009 Cadillac Escalade out his driveway, Woods struck a fire hydrant and subsequently ran into a tree. His wife Elin allegedly “came to the rescue” with a golf club in her hand, busted one of the windows out, and retrieved her then unconscious husband from the vehicle. Cops were called to the scene and the billionaire athlete was taken to Health Central Hospital and had noticeable lacerations to his face, which were originally thought to be caused by the minor accident, but after further investigation from TMZ, the scratches were most likely caused by his wife following a domestic dispute over Woods’ alleged affair with another woman.

Police say alcohol wasn’t a factor and that there were no signs of alcohol on the scene. Investigators close to the case have yet to speak to Tiger or his wife but plan to do so sometime today (Tiger and Elin turned cops away … again! They were supposed to meet at 3 PM and the lawyer gave no reason for their cancellation). But why on earth would Tiger Woods speed out of his driveway so early in the morning and cause all of this mayhem? Well, as usual TMZ has the dirt!

We’re told he said his wife had confronted him about reports that he was seeing another woman. The argument got heated and, according to our source, she scratched his face up. We’re told it was then Woods beat a hasty retreat for his SUV — but according to our source, Woods says his wife followed behind with a golf club. As Tiger drove away, she struck the vehicle several times with the club.

We’re told Woods became “distracted,” thought the vehicle was stopped, and looked to see what had happened. At that point the SUV hit the fire hydrant and then hit a tree.

We’re also told Woods had said during the conversation Friday he had been taking prescription pain medication for an injury, which could explain why he seemed somewhat out of it at the scene.

This is going to be interested and definitely will be a hot topic throughout the week, especially since Tiger has a big golf tournament Thursday and a press conference Tuesday.
